Employer Honored for Support of Spouse and Family Readiness Group

October 31, 2011: ESGR staff member Ms. Tatyana Alvarez, Mr. Bert L. Howe, ESGR volunteer Mr. Gil Florez

Anaheim Hills: Tatyana Alvarez of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense agency, presented the Seven Seals Award and four Patriot Awards to Bert L. Howe and Associates.

According to Andrew Wiktorowicz ESGR State Chair of California, "Bert L. Howe and Associates was nominated by a deployed Service member for not only the above and beyond support of the spouse, but also the Unit's Family Readiness Group. "Supportive supervisors valuably contribute to the nation's Guard and Reserve units. Their support of the Military Family is especially critical during a Service Members long term deployment."

As Dr. Evelyn D. Robertson, former ESGR California State Director of Awards stated, "When the Armed Forces began the practice of multiple deployments, ESGR had not yet included 'employers of military spouses' as a group to be considered for recognition. Fortunately this changed just in time for Bert L. Howe and Associates to be judged and bestowed the Seven Seals Award. Bert L. Howe and Associates offered significant support to military spouses and to the Family Readiness Group that assists deployed Units. The care and concern shown to military spouses by supervisors contributed greatly to the morale and effectiveness of deployed Guard and Reserve personnel. Bert L. Howe and Associates' exemplary service to military spouses served as one of the key reasons for the change in ESGR rules and I approved this award with great enthusiasm."

James Howe stated, "I'm honored and proud to be recognized by ESGR for supporting our Reservists and their families. This ceremony was a great experience and good for the morale of our company. It was great to see the impact of our continued support to those who selflessly serve our country. I know that the employees of the firm are pleased by this recognition."

Walnut Creek: This began with a note from LT Luke Arant “... extreme thanks for the wonderful care packages to single soldiers deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Ms. Shaw and her class and parents, took their personal time and expense to respond to the needs of people they have never met, that provided creature comforts and encouragement!” 492nd CA Battalion, home based in Buckeye, AZ.

It was quite a pleasure for my ESGR Team to present Ms. Paula Shaw and her class of Kindergarten and First Graders, with The Patriot Award and the Statement of Support for Murwood School in Walnut Creek, CA. For taking the effort, time and money to send you and your Troops in the Field, wonderful "Care Packages" of goodies that made your stay in the inhospitable lands of Iraq and Afghanistan a little more pleasant. The Children were very well mannered and knew exactly why we were there. They asked some great questions and were extremely attentive as we presented the reasons we visited their class that day.

Ms. Shaw prepared trays of decorated cup cakes with a little American Flag sticking up in each one! We and the children had a great time!

LT Arant, thank you and your Team for nominating Ms. Paula Shaw and her class at Murwood School, for the Patriot Award and the accompanying Statement of Support. It was a Grand Visit for ALL of us that day!

First-ever Employment Summit addresses unique needs of National Guardsmen

Maurice Evans, Executive Director of "Operation ReBoot" discusses the program with several reservists, one of the many community partners participating in the Employment Summit.

UPDATED: NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - Unemployment looms on the horizon for thousands of California National Guardsmen returning home from deployment, and volunteers in San Diego have come up with a special event aiming to ease this difficult transition.

Employer Support for Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Chairman Andrew Wiktorowicz announces the first-ever Employment Summit to be held at the National City Armory on April 13. This all-day event is intended to be a blueprint for future events to be held all over the state at National Guard units where unemployment is an immense issue, according to ESGR officials.

"This event is different from any other employment event because it is tailored to fit the needs of each individual Guardsman," said Patrick Morrissey, Military Outreach Coordinator for ESGR. "Unlike a job fair, our ESGR volunteers have gathered specialized key assets to come together in one place and help prepare for life after deployment - whether they aim to find a new job, go to school, use unemployment benefits or any combination of those - we will get them ready."

On April 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Guardsmen channeled through the National City Armory classroom and drill floor area in groups of about 20 for a few hours of career counseling and resume tweaking. The individual needs of each person which will be assessed upon their arrival to the armory to customize their Employment Summit experience. Troops received on-the-spot help with resume writing, honed their interview skills, and saw immediate results from online job searches with Jobing.com and Employer Partnership with the Armed Forces (EPAF). All results of the job search and the resume will be placed on a CD provided for each Guardsman to take home. Representatives from the Employment Development Department and the Veteran's Administration were present to explain benefits including health care and to accomplish registration. Representatives from California colleges to include Ashford University, Martinsburg Institute, and Argosy University were present for those who choose to take advantage of benefits being offered to the National Guard.

National City, CA 91950. For more information, please contact Maj. Kimberly Holman, public affairs officer for Joint Task Force Sierra at (805) 340-7301. Visit www.esgr.mil and www.caesgr.org to learn more about Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

March 23, 2011: Captain Marco Cromartie, Mike Chaplin, ESGR, Scott Tewel, INCSYS, Larry Kite Power4Vets PM

San Diego: Phil Stage, ESGR Volunteer and Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces (EPAF) Program Support Specialist notified Sam Giovinazzi, ESGR Administrative Support Technician in the San Diego Region 3 office of the Power4Vets program. A meeting with Captain Marco Cromartie, Commander Navy Region Southwest Reserve Component Command and the Power4Vets representatives was arranged. The estimated number of current system operators is 15,000. Many predict that 33% to 50% of these operators could retire in the next 5 years. If so, 1000 to 1500 positions could open up every year for the next 5 years. The Captain will assign a coordinator to provide wide USN distribution to this excellent job and career opportunity in the US Power industry for Navy vets. California ESGR Region 3 will work with the USN coordinator and Power4Vets to get the word out.

Major Andra Higgs (USAF AFRC) Provides ESGR Briefing to 452nd Aerospace Medicine Squadron (AMDS) Wing Enlisted Workshop

March 19, 2011: Major Higgs Briefing 452nd Aerospace Medicine Squadron (AMDS) Wing Enlisted Workshop

Riverside: There were about 225 Airmen (mostly E1-E6) in attendance at the event, including the 452nd Air Mobility Wing Commander (Col. McGregor) and Command Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt. Kelly). The organizers of the workshop included key senior NCOs from the base. I gave the ESGR briefing yesterday (allotted 30 minutes). I focused on three areas: member and their rights, role and responsibilities under USERRA; employer and its rights, role and responsibilities under USERRA; resources available through ESGR, its mission, purpose and role (including the CAESGR.org website, employer partnership initiative, the ombudsman, recognition program, employer flights, etc.).

There were a number of Airmen who indicated they'd had or have challenges with the current employer and there were about a dozen who wanted additional info (and it looked like about a third of the room was busy jotting down the employer partnership website when I gave that out. . . Also, I spoke with the employer partnership rep for the region. She was very eager to share information about the program and indicated that she'd also be available to speak at future events. . . I received solid questions from the audience and had about 50 people stop at the ESGR table for questions, reference material, contact info. I was there from roughly 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Unfortunately, I was not there Saturday (for the table display). I got tagged 0600 Saturday to address some real-world media and combat camera issues related to relief efforts Japan, Libya, Afghanistan. . .

I had a great time.

Department of Defense to Measure Guard and Reserve
Employment Practices

March 2, 2011: The Department of Defense (DoD) will survey employers nationwide in March and April to gain insight into the benefits and challenges of employing members of the Guard and Reserve. The DoD National Survey of Employers is the department’s largest study of its kind since the United States entered sustained military operations nearly 10 years ago in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001.

“Guard and Reserve members often return from military service as more valuable employees, but their extended absences can sometimes burden their civilian employers,” said Dennis McCarthy, assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs. “Our goal for this survey is to identify best practices in supporting employers of Guard and Reserve members and evaluate the effectiveness of Department of Defense employer support programs.”

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a DoD agency, will send the survey to 80,000 employers this week. The employers who have all been randomly selected will receive a letter with instructions and have eight weeks to complete the survey

More information on the survey can be found at http://www.esgr.org/employersurvey.
