Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972 whose mission is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve Service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflicts through mediation.
ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation, and if necessary, mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve personnel. Please contact your local California ESGR office for more information and assistance.
We'd like to know about your program and if we can assist you. We'd like to learn from your success to help other companies with their Veteran recruiting programs. Contact California ESGR's Chairman and tell us what you're doing for our Nation's Veterans.
|
And the number one reason: 1. Leadership: Military employees are excellent leaders and outstanding followers - loyal, dedicated, and highly motivated. Contact your local California ESGR office about how we can help you and your Guard and Reserve employee.

They are an excellent way to demonstrate the critical role of the National Guard and Reserve our nation's defense. Bosslift transports employers and supervisors to military training sites where they observe National Guard and Reserve members on duty as part of the Total Force. This provides the employer a better understanding of what their Reservists do when they are away from their civilian occupation for duty with their military units. Employers see firsthand the type and quality of military training and leadership activities National Guard and Reserve members receive. The selected sites for Bosslift usually emphasize National Guard and Reserve training and, whenever possible, include multiple branches of the military.
ESGR Bosslift gives employers a great opportunity to provide input to Department of Defense leadership. It provides employers the opportunity to share their insights on the challenges and benefits of having employees that serve in the Reserve components. Bosslift participants are asked about their concerns regarding their Reserve employees. Employers are encouraged to offer recommendations and ideas for improving the employer/employee relationship with respect to the consequences of military service. Lastly, employers are asked about their overall assessment of employer support programs and services. In addition to open discussion, their completed questionnaires are compiled in a written evaluation.
The California ESGR supports Bosslifts both from our State and from other States. Only one nomination per individual Guard member or Reservist will be accepted. Nominees must be physically able to climb into military equipment and walk without assistance.
See video examples of Boss Lifts in this Video section of this page.

Awarded by the State Committee to employers who go "Above and Beyond" the requirements of the law to support Guardsman and Reservists.

The Seven Seals Award is the highest award given by ESGR, and was created to publicly recognize American Employers who provide outstanding patriotric support and cooperation to employees and families of those who have been called to serve. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of our armed forces.

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

Secretary of Defense William Perry authorized the first award in 1996 and presented it to Schneider National, McDonnell Douglas, United Parcel Service Central Florida District, Tektronix, Inc. and National Life of Vermont. In the years since, over 100 employers have received this prestigious award. Today, 15 awards are presented each year to employers in three categories, big business, small business and the public sector.
The nomination process is open to all Guard and Reserve personnel and their families and applications are submitted online to ESGR. A national selection board comprised of senior Defense officials and business leaders selects the award recipients.
California is honored to have the following outstanding supporters of Freedom as 2011 recipients of the Secretary of Defense Freedom Award:
Orange County Sheriff's Department
Wells Fargo & Co.
